The Piedmont Pastelist: Pastel Expressions
The Piedmont Pastelists organization was formed in 2001 as a way to expand interest in this beautiful medium of soft pastel. Meeting monthly, the members share artwork, ideas, tips and opportunities. They also exhibit their work in parts of Central Virginia.
Soft pastels are a unique and misunderstood medium. Comprised of a higher concentration of pure pigment then other mediums, there is no liquid binder therefore not prone to cracking, blistering or yellowing over time. Pastel paintings from the 16th century exist today fresh and vivid.
The term “pastel” comes from the French word, “pastiche” which means “pure powdered pigment”. Historically, artists known for the use of pastels include Chardin, Manet, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec and Whistler.
This exhibit features 14 local pastel artists displaying their unique interpretation of landscapes, still life, portraiture and figures. Each piece tells a story and gives you insight into the beauty the artist sees in their subjects.
Artist participating are: Judy Blooms, Joan Dreicer, Cindy Haney, Anne Hopper, Katherine Hutter, Lucy Kinsey, Brita Lineberger, Michael McGurk, Diane Miller, Lorraine Momper, Carloyn Ratcliffe, Christine Rich, Shamim Sisson, and Diane Wilkin.
