Stephen Haske : TRANSFORMERS

We are all transitioning, transversing, transitioning, transmitting: transforming.

It is always good to have goals. For instance, to change from a standard issue, insecure robot to a more recognizable and acceptable thing like a fast car, a cool jet plane, or a powerful weapon. Perhaps transforming my exterior into an awesome robot standing tall and proud is more preferable to the messy amorphous, discombobulated, and disassembled mind and body that awkwardly unfold when no one else is around. These paintings and drawings represent the in-between and the becoming: the times when I am doing the work of allostasis. Which is to say, all the time. It is the constant, messy, and sometimes uncomfortable movement of becoming something new. A physical journey and internal exploration into the unknown.

Stephen Haske, originally from Orange County, California, is a multi-disciplinary artist whose explorations into the intricate relationship between architecture, mechanical structures, and nature define his compelling body of work. Having lived in New Orleans for a decade and pursued his education at Cal Poly Humboldt and the Savannah College of Art and Design, Haske’s diverse experiences significantly shape his creative perspective. Through drawing, painting and collage, he enjoys exploring unfamiliarity, playing with opposites, pushing borders and searching for balance. Currently based in Charlottesville, Virginia, with his family Stephen Haske draws inspiration from artists such as Lee Bontecou, Ralph Steadman, the beautiful people and places around him and his continuing adventures. He currently teaches art and design at Piedmont Virginia Community College and Renaissance School and is a resident artist at McGuffey Art Center.
