Scott F. Smith: Wanderous

Wanderous is a made-up word for a familiar feeling: the pleasure of moving through the world without a fixed destination, guided by curiosity, attention, and the possibility of discovery.

These photographs emerged from that state of wandering. Made while walking, looking, and lingering, they trace encounters with places, light, textures, and fleeting moments that might otherwise have passed unnoticed. The camera becomes less a tool for capturing a specific subject and more a companion in exploration. Trusting curiosity creates space for the photograph to reveal itself.

But Wanderous is also about another kind of journey: the return. Revisiting photographs from different times and places, I found myself moving through my own archive as though seeing it for the first time. Distance—both temporal and emotional—revealed details, connections, and meanings that had remained hidden in the moment the images were made.

This exhibition exists between these two acts of wandering: outward into the world and backward through memory. It is an invitation to slow down, look again, and follow where attention leads. The richest discoveries come not only from intentional pursuit, but also when we allow ourselves to wander—and to wonder.

About the Artist

Scott F. Smith earned a BFA in Photographic Illustration from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1983 and a Master of Architecture from the University of Virginia in 1994. He has worked as a commercial and fine art photographer for more than 35 years, with commercial work focused primarily on architecture throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

For the past fifteen years, Smith has devoted increasing attention to personal fine art and documentary projects. His work moves between the studio and the natural world, exploring light, material, form, and transformation. His studio-based series include constructions made from cut white paper, ice, sheer fabrics, and collaged fragments of discarded materials. At the same time, he ventures into landscapes and natural environments, finding subjects in the shifting qualities of light, weather, organic forms, and the traces of time and change found in the world around him.

These two approaches continually inform one another. Experiences in the landscape lead Smith to explore new materials and processes in the studio, while studio experimentation heightens his awareness of light, structure, texture, and transformation in the natural world. Photography becomes a way of moving between these spaces—observing, constructing, and discovering.
