to friends of mcguffey art center:
With all that is going on in our lives, it is easy to forget how rare an artist-run organization like McGuffey is....Where else in Charlottesville can you access art exhibitions, dance performances, music, improv, art making demos, classes, workshops, life drawing sessions, and more, all under one roof? Since 1975, we have welcomed our community to a building that is free and open to the public six days a week, with studio doors open for visitors to connect directly with working artists as they witness firsthand the creative spirit in action.
New this year, we were part of the inaugural River Fest art celebration on the Rivanna River, which featured site artworks, dance, music, and a collaborative banner by 28 McGuffey member artists, as well as an artmaking tent where 64 visitors made prints by hand.
We created a new Fall Art Fest, which included resurrecting the Y'Art Sale fundraiser on the front lawn and our second Finders Keepers, where over 100 free artworks were hidden in the Downtown Mall and Belmont neighborhoods. We even partnered with Lua to host the Day of the Dead festival for another year, and in the spring look forward to being a new venue for the Festival of the Book and Tom Tom Founders Festival.
We hope you had a chance to see our 33 exhibitions, which included shows about marine creatures, paintings paired with jewelry, sculpture by University of Virginia students, and political works responding to the demonstrations of August 12 in Charlottesville.
In 2017, McGuffey Art Association's over 150 members invested in a development director position to enhance McGuffey's outreach efforts and sustainability into the future. As we look forward to expanding our service to the area's cultural community, please consider a gift to McGuffey. Now is a perfect time to support this pioneering arts organization, one that has proven to be a leader in creative engagement in the region for more than 42 years.
